It’s chilly and snowy today, so Im not going out and instead I’m now concentrating on decorating our house so it will be all up together, when we leave for France in just a few weeks.

Since I doubt that I’ll find to time to paint in the next week here’s a small painting I did this last summer in SW France. I set up my easel to look up to the village entrance called “Le Portail Haut”. It had felt so childishly exciting to see the bunting up and ready for the Sunday village fete, that I immediately rushed out to paint it from my front door.

On a cold, late winter’s afternoon I started to paint this outside, but I quickly changed my mind to finish it in the studio … warmer! (There are a couple of little black spots on it, which will brush off as soon as the painting has dried).

Montisi (where I live most of the time) has a direct view out to Monte Amiata which is a long extinct volcano. From this mountain, the Sienese region receives abundant good drinking water as well as an amazing amount of hot thermal water in which we love to float around on a cold and perfectly beautiful winter’s day.

I particularly love the way it becomes part of the sky and reflects the light … it is an endlessly fascinating subject for me.

From day to day at this time of year, the weather changes from bright sunlit, sparkling frosty mornings, to rainy days and snow.

This was a recent morning in Montisi, looking out towards Siena, with bad weather coming in towards us; despite the heavy grey sky, the sun managed to get in underneath the cloud cover and light things up.

By the way, I have had a real struggle with this Worpress blog (only because I am very computer inept), which is why I have gone back to Blogspot as well … I will see which works best for me!

The Last Clementine

The very nice thing is that all the food here in Tuscany is seasonal. The first clementines arrived in October and now the season is over; still good for oranges and lemons for another few weeks.

I do love painting these citrous fruits, not only because of their rich colour, but also for their staying power in a still-life. In the winter, oil paint is very slow to dry and I usually need another day to finish the painting because at a certain point I don’t like to work on a slimey paint surface.

This is a favourite view of mine, because it’s aways changing and I love the way that the mountain, Monte Amiata, seems to be an integral part of the sky.

This was a summer painting, in the late afternoon – evening, which was perfect in every way, apart from all the mosquitoes that wanted to join in the fun too. Very annoying, but I suppose this is all part of the experience!
