I’m cheating really by putting up this little painting I did last summer. At the moment, I’m trying hard to pack and make sure that important things aren’t left behind in France that I will need in Italy.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the Tuscan weather will cheer up and I can paint outside again.

I started this some weeks ago, but never finished it and so I have been playing around with it in my studio while the weather was bad yesterday. Meanwhile the tree has bloomed and the blossom taken away with the wind … this burgeoning season leaves me breathless as things are changing every day; all very beautiful, but moving far too fast for me and my paintbrush!

I’ve been concentrating on other work and never did finish this little painting of our friend Piccolo’s circus tent. It was very bad luck for him that it should turn out to be terrible weather the day of his fete, because there had been so much preparation in getting his circus tent (chapiteau) up in the field. A whole variety of mowing machines were dragged out into the field, but none of them worked and there was much cussing and swearing until finally one, at least, was coaxed into reluctant action and the long grass, full of wonderful dandelions was cut.

I spent a little time the morning of the fete, sketching the tent from different spots; it looked so merry amidst the bright green grass. It’s just a pity that soon after I finished it poured with rain.

I made the first stab at this tiny painting out in a field until it started to pour with rain!

I chose a tiny board, because it seemed easier to handle what with being outdoors in the elements, but the subject was a bit bigger than the support. The dandelion clocks attracted me with the lush late spring growth and of course Piccolo’s “chapiteau” all set up in his field for last weekend’s fete.
