SORACTE … another view
Oil on board
30cms x 20cms
NFS

This was the most amazingly beautiful place and far too much to paint on a little board, so I will use this as a study for a larger painting if I can manage it away from the magic.
I love painting landscape in this part of Lazio.

My low prices on this blog will now only be on offer for one week (as from the posting date) and thereafter they will revert to my unframed gallery prices.

I’m in my studio finishing off some of the studies I painted down in Civita Castellana … it either rained, so I couldn’t finish or, as in this one, the oil paint was too wet to work on anymore.

I worked on this study of the oak tree (with Monte Soratte in the background) at the end of the day in an extraordianary and ancient place; a city built by the Romans to house the Faliscans who they had conquered and evicted from their lands.

Encouraged by those artists of the 1800’s like Corot and Turner, who always painted oil on paper, I thought I would give it a go on this trip. It turns out to be rather wonderful, because since the paper is more absorbent, the oil paint dries very quickly, so you don’t have the problem on cool days of it turning into a smeary slimey mess and I found I could complete a painting in the allotted time … excellent!

I used 140lb “hot press” good quality watercolour paper, which in conservation terms is very good. This can be mounted on board and treated like a conventional oil, or simply put into a mount and framed like a watercolour under glass; I’ve just tried this and it looks good.

I painted this two evenings ago. This is very near where I live in Tuscany and the whole pleasure for me to be outside is not only the painting, but listening to the birdsong, scenting the sweet perfume of the land and observing the fast changing light; each moment beautiful.

After the storm.

I painted this on the same day as the previous painting I posted.

Everything looked beautiful, but our very long wet spring hadn’t quite given up yet and gave us storms and pouring rain at midday. I painted this in the afternoon, as the sun came out and lit up some of the pale limestone at the top of the mountain.

I’m just back from six days of painting “en pleine air”, south of Tuscany, in Lazio at Civita Castellana. In the seventeen and eighteen hundreds, this was a very important stopping point on the road to Rome during the 1700s and 1800s for artists, such as Corot, Bidauld, Valenciennes, Thomas Jones and Turner. Here, they sketched and explored ancient motifs for their classically themed paintings which they would create in their studios from their abundant sketches and small oils on paper when they returned to northern Europe.

The wonderful lone mountain Mount Soracte (Monte Soratte in Italian) rises high above the Tiber valley and fills the sky; I find it an irresistable subject for my painting and I love to think of these different artists from times past, enjoying the same excitement as I have had in painting this gorgeous landscape.

Summer?

I thought I’d let you know that there’s been no painting for the moment, as we’ve been inundated with torrential rain and many weeds with grass “as high as an elephant’s eye”.

I am now going away for 10 days for concentrated painting in Civita Castellana … a wonderful place for artists. More later!
